Tekken 5 recompiled: artwork from the original game
Artwork from the original game.
Quick answer

Open tekken5.online in Chrome or Edge and press Play; the PS2 game loads with no install, and the Starblade arcade game is playable while it loads. It is built on the PS2 Web Recomp static recompiler, but the site streams the whole game disc itself. Story Battle against the CPU is tested; two-player online is not.

The original game

The fifth main Tekken game came to arcades in 2004 and to the PS2 in 2005. The PS2 version added the Devil Within side mode and the arcade versions of Tekken, Tekken 2, Tekken 3 and StarBlade. It holds a Metacritic score of 88 and was named best fighting game of 2005 by GameSpot. Wikipedia cites sales of over 9.43 million copies.

The browser version

The page, titled "Tekken 5 Web Online", names @Slayoner on X as the creator and gives no real name. It calls itself an independent project "inspired by" PES 6 Web Online by OptiProjects, and credits its web engine to PS2 Web Recomp by snuri00, released under the MIT licence (the licence file on the site names Samir Nuri). Its rights page says it is an unofficial community project with no licence or permission from the rights holders, and that the game will be taken down if a rights holder asks. The site shows third-party ads.

PS2 Web Recomp is a static recompiler. Its README says the game's Emotion Engine machine code is translated ahead of time into C++ and compiled to WebAssembly, so the main CPU is never interpreted, while the rest of the console is emulated by a runtime that draws with WebGPU. The PS2's sound and I/O processor runs the game's own modules on an interpreter. The repository was created on 8 October 2026; its README names Gran Turismo 4 and God of War II as the games brought up so far and does not mention Tekken 5.

The repository says it includes no game data and that the player brings a disc image of a game they own; it also says the generated code belongs to the game's owners and should not be published. This site takes a different approach: its /api/game endpoint returns a full disc image of about 4.1 GB, served from the site itself in 256 KB pieces over HTTP, so the whole game disc is streamed to every visitor with nothing to supply.

The page says this is the European version. Tested, according to the page: the difficulty setting, the mode menu, fighter select and a Story Battle fight against the CPU. Starblade, the Namco arcade game on the disc, can be played while the main game loads. It needs an up-to-date Chrome or Edge with WebGPU on a PC; phones get touch controls if the browser supports WebGPU and WebAssembly. Progress is saved to a virtual memory card in the browser that can be downloaded or imported as a .ps2 file.

Online play uses private rooms with a shareable code, a "find opponent" matchmaking button, a public chat, a private chat per room and a daily and weekly board of online wins. Each PC runs its own copy of the game and the server relays the controls every frame; the room creator is player 1 and picks VS BATTLE. Rooms take two players and are labelled experimental. The page states that VS BATTLE has not yet been tested online with two players.

Questions

Can you play Tekken 5 in a browser?

Yes. Open the page in an up-to-date Chrome or Edge on a PC, press Play and it loads with no install or account. A gamepad is recommended; the keyboard also works.

Do I need my own copy of Tekken 5?

No. The site streams a full disc image (about 4.1 GB) itself. The PS2 Web Recomp repository it is built on asks users to bring a disc of a game they own; this site does not.

Is it recompiled or emulated?

Both, in part. The main CPU code is statically recompiled to WebAssembly by PS2 Web Recomp; the rest of the console (graphics, sound, I/O processor) is emulated by its runtime.

Does Tekken 5 work online?

The site has private rooms, matchmaking and chat, but the page says VS BATTLE has not yet been tested online with two players.

Is it official?

No. The page calls it an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with Bandai Namco Entertainment, and says it has no licence from the rights holders.
