The original game
Refugees from a dying home world arrive on the planet Ragol aboard the ship Pioneer 2, then investigate a monster-infested planet and an ancient evil called Dark Falz. It pioneered online console gaming over dial-up, with players forming teams in lobbies and trading and taking quests on Pioneer 2. The Dreamcast original holds 89/100 on Metacritic. Sega's official servers shut down in stages, the last Japanese Blue Burst servers on December 27, 2010.

The browser version
PSO Reborn was a community-led fan project that ported Phantasy Star Online to the browser. Coverage on September 15, 2026 described it as playable on desktop and mobile with persistent save data and a 60 fps target, running Episode I and II locally, with touch and gamepad support, solo play and online multiplayer. The reporter played about an hour and a half on a phone and found the portrait interface worked well.
On September 24, 2026, Power Up Gaming reported that Sega had issued a DMCA takedown notice and that the browser client was forced offline. The project's own page now reads: "PSO Reborn has been taken offline following a DMCA notice from SEGA." It shows "Servers offline", gives no date for a return and says to follow Discord or X for updates. Unnamed representatives confirmed to the reporter that they are complying.
The page is signed "Gigalink", who links to the X account Bottled_Captain. We did not find any other developers named, or how the port was built.
