Quick answer

Open the WASM Arcade page and play Minecraft 1.8.8 in the browser as EaglercraftX, a fan-made port, with survival and creative worlds saved on your own device. It is unofficial and the sources note that Mojang's EULA forbids redistributing the game. Multiplayer on that host is not stated.

The original game

Players mine and place blocks in a generated world, survive at night and build. It has sold over 400 million copies, described as the best-selling video game of all time. Version 1.8 came out two weeks before the Microsoft deal was announced.

Created by Markus "Notch" Persson, with Jens "Jeb" Bergensten as the other designer and C418 as composer. Microsoft announced it was buying Mojang on September 15, 2014. Minecraft on Wikipedia

The browser version

WASM Arcade offers Minecraft 1.8.8 as "the EaglercraftX WebAssembly build, with survival and creative worlds saved on your own device". INXANITY lists the same page, credited to WASM Arcade. Worlds stay in the browser on your device.

Eaglercraft is a fan project that ports Minecraft 1.8 to run in a browser tab. A README mirrored on a code host describes EaglercraftX as supporting singleplayer and multiplayer and as running on browsers as old as Chrome 38 in its JavaScript form, with a WebAssembly (WASM-GC) runtime that is experimental and not supported by every browser. The sources used here do not name its author.

It is unofficial. One secondary page says Mojang's EULA prohibits redistributing copies of the game. Many other sites carry Eaglercraft builds, including low-quality ones, and a build from an unknown site is a risk.
