Quick answer

Open generals.wasm.ltd in Chrome or Edge, point it at your own installed copy of Zero Hour, and it streams the game files from your disk. It is built from EA's 2025 source release. It needs WebGPU, and multiplayer is LAN play over a WebSocket relay.

The original game

Zero Hour adds three five-mission campaigns, one each for the United States, the Global Liberation Army and China, plus three playable generals per faction. It also introduced Generals' Challenge, where you face a series of opposing generals ending in a powerful boss. It holds 83/100 on Metacritic.

An expansion to Command & Conquer: Generals. EA released the source code for Zero Hour and the original game in 2025 under the GPL v3. Generals - Zero Hour on Wikipedia

The browser version

GeneralsX Web, the wasm-generals repository, describes itself as "Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour running in the browser: WebAssembly + WebGPU". It is built by Erasmo "ebellumat" Bellumat under Origami 限 as part of the wasm.ltd preservation initiative, on top of GeneralsX by fbraz3.

Upstream is EA's official Generals source release, the TheSuperHackers/GeneralsGameCode project, and cross-platform work by Fighter19 and feliwir. The game is compiled with Emscripten and renders through WebGPU using a Direct3D 8 translation layer. It keeps the original UI, load screens, pause menu and credits.

No game data is distributed. The port streams the .big archives from your own installed copy (Steam, the EA app or a disc) on demand. It needs a WebGPU browser (Chrome or Edge) and HTTPS, because SharedArrayBuffer requires a secure context.

Multiplayer is LAN play over a WebSocket relay, with a shareable link for players on the same network. The web page code is MIT-licensed and the engine is GPL-3.0 with additional terms. EA has not endorsed the project.
